At Seascape Lawn Care, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“How often and how much should I water my lawn?”
The answer depends on your system, your lawn’s exposure to sun, and the time of year. In this Healthy Lawns segment, Dr. Jim Wilkinson has some simple guidelines to keep your grass looking its best.
If You Have an Automatic Sprinkler System
A good general rule is to water every other day. Many homeowners split this into:
- Odd days: Water the front lawn
- Even days: Water the back lawn
For most lawns, 30–40 minutes per zone is enough to prevent drought stress.
- Sunny areas: May need up to 45 minutes per watering
- Shady areas: Often require only 15–20 minutes
If You Water Manually
Without an automatic system, plan to water each area for about 45 minutes per session. Doing this twice a week is usually sufficient to keep your lawn hydrated and healthy.
Tips for Success
- Adjust times based on weather—reduce watering during rainy weeks, and increase during heat waves.
- Watch for signs of drought stress, such as grass turning bluish-gray or footprints that remain visible.
- Deep, less frequent watering encourages stronger root growth compared to short, daily watering.
Bottom line: Whether you have a sprinkler system or water manually with a sprinkler, aim for consistent, deep watering. Adjust for sunny or shady areas, and your lawn will reward you with lush, green growth all season long.
