Keeping your lawn healthy and vibrant takes more than just regular mowing and fertilizing—it requires smart watering habits. At Seascape Lawn Care, we know that when you water is just as important as how much you water. In this Healthy Lawns segment, Dr. Jim Wilkinson shares tips to make the most of every drop and keep your grass lush year-round.
How Long Should You Water Your Lawn?
In general, lawns need a minimum of 30 minutes of watering each time you water. This allows the moisture to soak deep into the soil, encouraging strong root growth. Shallow watering leads to weak, thirsty grass that’s more prone to stress and disease.
The Best Time of Day to Water
When it comes to timing, your goal is to maximize water absorption and minimize waste. The ideal times are:
- Late at night (after sunset but before dawn)
- Very early in the morning (before 8 a.m.)
During these hours, temperatures are cooler, and the wind is usually calm—meaning less evaporation and less risk of water blowing onto the street or your neighbor’s lawn.
Why You Should Avoid Watering Midday
Watering during the heat of the day leads to rapid evaporation. On windy days, much of your water may miss its target entirely, ending up down the street instead of in your soil.
What If You Can’t Water in the Morning or at Night?
Life gets busy, and sometimes your schedule doesn’t allow for ideal watering times. If you can only water in the afternoon, go ahead—it will still benefit your lawn. While early morning and late-night watering are best, any watering is better than none.
Water Smarter, Not Harder
By watering deeply and at the right time of day, you’ll:
- Conserve water
- Save money on your utility bill
- Encourage a healthier, greener lawn
At Seascape Lawn Care, we help homeowners achieve lawns that are not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible.
