Navigating Summer Watering Restrictions: Tips for a Healthy Lawn

In many of the towns where Seascape cares for lawns, summer often brings watering restrictions. These can last for part—or even all—of the season, and the rules can vary widely.

Some communities allow watering only on odd or even days, while others limit you to using a handheld hose. In the most restrictive cases, no outside watering is permitted at all. In this Healthy Lawns segment, Dr. Jim Wilkinson has tips on how to navigate these restrictions with the lowest impact possible.

When Limited Watering Is Allowed

If your town allows any watering, even on a restricted schedule, take advantage of it. While your lawn may still show signs of drought stress, giving it some water is far better than none. This can help it bounce back more quickly once the rain returns or restrictions are lifted.

Well Water vs. Municipal Water

Many homeowners with automatic sprinkler systems use municipal water, which is subject to town bans. However, if you have a well, you are typically exempt and may continue watering. In fact, some homeowners install a dedicated well solely for lawn irrigation.

Keep in mind: your neighbors may not be able to water at all, so don’t be surprised if your green lawn stands out during a drought.

When You Can’t Water at All

If your lawn can’t be watered, expect some drought stress—especially if your soil is thin and your grass has shallow roots. In such cases, summer dormancy is almost inevitable.

The good news? In most cases, lawns in Southern New England recover once the weather changes and moisture returns.

Seascape’s Approach During Drought

When watering restrictions are in place, Seascape adjusts both the quantity and type of fertilizer we apply. We also stay vigilant for insect pests like chinch bugs, which thrive in hot, dry conditions and can cause lasting damage when combined with drought stress.

Our goal is to help your lawn survive the dry period so it can rebound quickly with healthier, more resilient growth.
