Spring Grubs: What You Need to Know

As spring rolls in and your lawn starts to green up, it’s normal to worry about pests—especially grubs. Those little white, C-shaped larvae have a bad reputation for wrecking lawns, and the internet doesn’t help by fueling the fear.

But here’s the truth: spring grubs are not the threat they seem to be, and reacting too soon can actually do more harm than good.

Understanding the Grub Life Cycle

Grubs are the larvae of beetles like Japanese beetles and June bugs. These pests lay eggs in mid-to-late summer. The larvae hatch and feed on grass roots during the fall, then burrow down to overwinter. In early spring, they resurface briefly—less active and nearing pupation.

And this matters because: they’re barely feeding in spring.

Why You Shouldn’t Worry Right Now

  1. Low Risk of Damage
    • Spring grubs don’t eat much. Most of the heavy feeding happened in the previous fall. If your lawn looks okay now, it probably is.
  2. Early Spring Treatments Aren’t Effective
    • As with most things in life, timing is everything. Because the grubs you see in early spring are older and less active, most pesticides won’t work. Applying treatment too early often just wastes money.
  3. Nature Has Its Own Pest Control
    • Birds, beneficial insects, and even a healthy lawn can naturally limit grub populations. A few grubs in the soil are normal.

So, When Should You Take Action?

If you saw serious grub damage last fall or notice dead patches now that peel back easily, you may need to plan ahead. While spring grubs aren’t the cause of the damage, spring is exactly when you want to take action. Putting down a preventive grub control application by late spring will help stop the life cycle and keep those new (and hungry) grubs from hatching in the fall. Newly hatched grubs feed on grass roots, which causes damage. Stopping them before they feed will protect your lawn from damage.

That’s where Seascape Lawn Care can help.

Seascape’s Proactive Grub Protection

At Seascape, we focus on timing, science, and sustainability. Rather than throwing down unnecessary treatments, we monitor your lawn and apply preventative grub control exactly when it will be most effective—typically in the late spring.
