Lawn Clippings: Should You Leave ‘Em or Bag ‘Em?

When mowing your lawn, you’re often faced with a choice: leave the clippings or bag them up?

In this Healthy Lawns segment, Dr. Jim Wilkinson breaks down the benefits of both methods so your lawn gets the healthiest treatment possible all season long.

Why You Should Leave Lawn Clippings

In most cases, leaving clippings on the lawn is the best move. This practice—known as “grasscycling”—offers several advantages:

1. Natural Fertilizer

Grass clippings are loaded with nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus—the same key nutrients found in commercial lawn fertilizers. When you leave them on the lawn, they decompose quickly and release these nutrients back into the soil, promoting healthier turf growth.

2. Moisture Retention

A thin layer of clippings helps reduce evaporation, keeping your soil moist longer—especially helpful during hot summer days.

3. Soil Health

As clippings break down, they add organic matter to the soil, improving structure and microbial activity over time.

4. Less Work, Less Waste

Bagging grass clippings requires extra time and effort, not to mention the environmental impact of sending organic material to the landfill. Leaving clippings saves you time and reduces waste.

🛑 When You Should Bag or Remove Clippings

While leaving clippings is generally preferred, there are times when bagging is the better option:

1. Excessively Long Grass

If you’ve skipped a mowing or it rained heavily, the grass may be overgrown. Mowing very tall grass produces thick clumps of clippings that can smother the lawn and invite disease. In this case, it’s better to bag and remove the excess.

2. Weed or Disease Management

If your lawn has been treated for weeds or is battling fungal disease, remove clippings to prevent spreading seeds or spores throughout the lawn.

3. Poor Mulching Equipment

Not all mowers are created equal. If your mower doesn’t mulch clippings finely, they may clump together and form thatch. In these situations, bagging may help maintain lawn health.

4. Aesthetic Preference

Some homeowners prefer the super-clean look of a freshly bagged lawn. If presentation is a priority for you (especially before events or home showings), bagging may make sense short term.

The Seascape Takeaway

At Seascape, we recommend leaving your clippings whenever conditions are right. It’s good for your lawn, good for the environment, and saves you time. But if your lawn is unusually long, stressed by disease, or recovering from heavy weed growth, bagging may be the smarter move.
