Mowing Height: Why Too Low is No Good

Cutting your grass too low—often called “scalping”—can harm your lawn in several important ways:

1. Weakened Grass

Mowing too short removes much of the leaf surface needed for photosynthesis, weakening the grass and reducing its ability to grow and recover.

2. Increased Weed Growth

A taller, thicker lawn shades the soil, making it harder for weed seeds (like crabgrass) to germinate. Short grass lets in more sunlight, creating ideal conditions for weeds to take over.

3. Soil Moisture Loss

Longer grass blades help shade the soil and retain moisture. Cutting too low exposes the soil, increasing evaporation and drying out the roots.

4. Higher Risk of Disease and Pests

Scalped grass is stressed and more vulnerable to diseases and pests. Damaged lawns have less resilience to bounce back from these threats.

5. Shallower Root System

Grass that is kept too short tends to develop shallow roots, making it less drought-tolerant and more dependent on frequent watering.

As a general rule, never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at a time, and adjust your mower height based on your grass type.
