Chinch Bugs or Drought? How to Tell What’s Really Damaging Your Lawn

When your lawn begins turning brown during the hottest part of summer, it’s natural to assume it simply needs more water. But if you’ve been watering consistently and your grass continues to decline, the real culprit may be one of the most damaging lawn insects in Southern New England: chinch bugs.

In the latest edition of Healthy Lawns with Dr. Jim Wilkinson, Dr. Wilkinson explains how homeowners can recognize the signs of a chinch bug infestation and why acting quickly can save a lawn from extensive damage.

What Are Chinch Bugs?

Chinch bugs are tiny insects that feed on grass by piercing the blades and extracting moisture. As they feed, they also inject toxins into the grass, causing it to die.

Although they’re difficult to spot, these pests can cause significant damage in a short amount of time.

In Southern New England, chinch bugs are typically most active:

  • July
  • August
  • September

This is also when homeowners are most likely to mistake insect damage for drought stress.

Why Chinch Bug Damage Looks Like Drought

One of the biggest challenges with chinch bugs is that their damage closely resembles a lawn suffering from lack of water.

If you’re watering regularly but your lawn:

  • Continues to turn brown
  • Shows patches that aren’t recovering
  • Appears to stay in drought stress despite irrigation

There’s a good chance chinch bugs may be responsible.

Unlike drought, simply adding more water won’t solve the problem if insects are causing the damage.

How to Check for Chinch Bugs

Adult chinch bugs are small—only about a quarter-inch long—but the younger insects, called nymphs, are even easier to recognize once you know what to look for.

Dr. Wilkinson recommends getting down on your hands and knees and gently separating the grass near the surface.

If you have a significant infestation, you may notice:

  • Tiny bright red nymphs
  • Bugs about the size of a pinhead
  • Insects crawling onto your hands as you inspect the turf

Finding these insects is one of the clearest signs that chinch bugs are damaging your lawn.

SeaScape Monitors for Chinch Bugs Throughout the Summer

As part of SeaScape’s regular lawn care program, technicians routinely inspect for chinch bug activity during summer service visits.

If chinch bugs are found during a scheduled application, they’re treated immediately with the appropriate control products.

However, infestations can sometimes develop between visits.

That’s why homeowners should contact SeaScape if they notice:

  • Brown patches spreading rapidly
  • Grass that doesn’t recover after watering
  • Areas that appear drought-stressed despite adequate irrigation

A professional inspection can quickly determine whether chinch bugs—or another issue—is causing the problem.

Protect Your Lawn Before Damage Spreads

The longer chinch bugs remain active, the more extensive the damage can become. Early diagnosis and treatment are the best ways to protect your lawn and keep it healthy throughout the summer.

If your lawn isn’t responding the way it should, don’t assume it’s simply the weather.

Let the experts at SeaScape determine whether chinch bugs are to blame and recommend the right solution before small problem areas become major repairs.
