red-thread2Given the amount of rainy, humid weather we’ve had during the last few weeks, it looks as if our lawn’s previous drought concerns have started to evaporate. With that said, you may have recently seen some red blemishes appear on your property. Your lawn is made up of thousands of individual grass plants. Some plants may be red while others remain unaffected. This is likely red thread, one of the most common diseases lawns in our area can contract. Red thread tends to show up more in late spring when we have cooler, wet weather.

While the reddish hue on your lawn doesn’t look good, red thread is typically only a cosmetic type of disease and rarely causes permanent damage. If you notice any on your property, contact your SeaScape tech or call us to learn more about a disease control program. If your SeaScape tech sees red thread, they will automatically apply extra fertilizer per university recommendations.

red-threadIn the meantime, here are some tips you can use to help control the outbreak of red thread:

  • Because red thread is cosmetic, fungicides are not recommended for use on your lawn.
  • Mow high and bag the clippings until it is resolved.
  • Continue to water your lawn, but only every second or third day.
  • Water your lawn early in the morning so that it can dry throughout the day.
