Labor Day may be the unofficial end to summer, but that doesn’t mean mosquitoes have gotten the message.

Not only is a mosquito bite itchy and sometimes painful, but those pesky bugs can also carry a variety of diseases that pose a threat to your health–including West Nile Virus, Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya.

That’s why protecting you and your family from mosquito bites is so important. The Centers for Disease Control recommends several steps you can take to keep those blood-suckers at bay.

  • Use Insect Repellent
  • Avoid being outside during peak mosquito hours – dusk through dawn
  • Wear Protective Clothing
  • Control Mosquitoes Indoors and Outdoors
    • Use screens on windows and doors and repair holes in screens
    • Use air conditioning if possible
    • Eliminate water sources that can serve as mosquito breeding grounds, such as tires, buckets, toys, birdbaths, flowerpots, or trash containers

The CDC also recommends using outdoor insect spray in dark, humid areas where mosquitoes rest, like under patio furniture, decking, or shrubbery.
